Tourism Through The Ages

The industry of tourism is at its peak. This is not just applicable to one country or one continent. In fact, thanks to the power of the World Wide Web and social media, people are discovering other countries aside from their own. Tourism has changed in a way because people are now more open to share their experiences while travelling to foreign places. Through blogs and reviews complete with photo and videos, others can have a glimpse at someone else's getaway before they decide that they want it also for themselves.
Travelling has also been easier thanks to more affordable flights that allow people to plan trips around the world. People from Asia, for example, can now explore South America and then plan their next exploration to Europe. With the efficiency of air travel, tourism allows people to get to a location fast and without hassle. Compared to sea-faring and land travel during the olden days, a traveller's time to explore is too short. These days, one can take the time to enjoy the scenery and immerse in the culture before he or she goes back home.
The scope of the word "tourism" has changed. Far from the usual sight-seeing and a little cultural exposure, the word now involves other industries. Terms like medical tourism or entertainment tourism are now widely used that people go to certain countries to avail of medical treatments or watch concerts. Because of these aspects that are now part of tourism, the beauty in each country is highlighted. And this beauty goes beyond the scenic places. After all, a huge part of tourism has to do with the people and culture. When these positive aspects in a place are highlighted, many people will be encouraged to experience a country first-hand.
Tourism is improving day by day. As fast as the changes in technology, people are being presented with more options to explore the world. Unlike during the earlier times, tourism can now be enjoyed by all kinds and standing of people. Thanks to globalization, the limits and boundaries are now expanding, letting people explore the world outside of their comfort zones. This era is the best time to discover and to enjoy the rest of the world. If you want to see the world, the industry of tourism is putting on a great show that will make you amazed at the world you live in.

The Art of Tipping in Punta Cana

When you are on vacation it is sometimes hard to figure out how to give tips. Who should you tip? When and how much should you tip? These are typically the questions that I hear from tourists traveling to Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic.
People who work in tourism in Punta Cana often receive a relatively small basic salary, which is supplemented with tips and commissions for sales (e.g. excursions). These hardworking people are used to receiving and often expect to receive a tip for their services.
If you want to be fully prepared to give tips from the moment you arrive to Punta Cana, it would be a good idea to make sure you have plenty of small USD bills. When you have arrived in Punta Cana, you can always exchange larger USD bills to smaller bills or withdraw money in the local currency (i.e. Dominican Pesos) from any ATM. One USD is approximately 40 Dominican Pesos.
Arriving at the airport:
It all begins when you arrive at the airport in Punta Cana. You will be greeted by friendly porters/bellboys who are ready to help you locate and carry your luggage from the baggage claim to the car or bus that will take you to your resort. The porter expects to receive USD 1 per suitcase, or a bit more if your luggage is very heavy or if you have lots of it.
At the resort:
When you arrive at the resort, you may tip the driver if you feel that he has been driving well, has been friendly and you generally feel satisfied with his services. Normally, you should tip 10-15% of the price for the trip, which in most cases would be approx. USD 3-5 if your resort were located in Punta Cana or Bávaro (within 10-30 minutes from the airport).
When you arrive at the resort, a bellboy, who will assist you with your luggage, will greet you. You may tip him USD 1 per suitcase if he brings your luggage to your room.
It is always a good idea to tip the maid, who cleans your room, either at the beginning of your vacation or during. Normally, you should tip the maid about USD 2 per day and leave the money on the bed where she is sure to find it.
Sometime during your vacation in Punta Cana, you will most likely need the assistance of the concierge - e.g. to make dinner reservations. A tip of about USD 5-10 for his/her assistance will go a long way, and you may experience that a table at the restaurant, which was originally full, is now available for you at the hour you desire. You may also experience that something, which was completely impossible for you to obtain all of a sudden, becomes "no problemo".
Waiters and bartenders will for sure appreciate your tip. You can either leave a larger tip of approx. USD 10-20 at the beginning of your vacation (then they will surely never forget you) or smaller tips throughout your vacation (e.g. USD 1-2 every time you get great service).
On an excursion or at the golf course:
If you are going on an excursion during your vacation in Punta Cana, it is recommendable that you bring money for tips to the tour guide. He/she will typically share the tips with the driver and/or other staff on the excursion. If you have had a good time, you can easily leave USD 2-3 on a half-day excursion and USD 5 on a full day excursion. If you have gone on a private excursion with a private driver or tour guide, you should leave a larger tip, e.g. USD 10.
If you are a golfer and are going to play one of the courses in Punta Cana or Casa de Campo where caddies are mandatory (Punta Espada, Corales or Teeth of the Dog), you must typically pay a caddie fee of USD 25-30 for the caddie. Normally you will need to have one caddie per golf cart with 2 persons. Apart from the caddie fee, a tip of USD 15-20 per person is expected, depending on how satisfied you have been with the caddie or how well you have played... and how great your mood is after the round.
If someone cleans your golf clubs and/or shoes after the round, you should tip this person USD 3-5.
At the local restaurant:
If you decide to go out to eat at one of the local restaurants in Punta Cana, you should be aware that there is usually already a 10% tip included in your bill (by law). In most places, you are expected to leave an additional tip of 5-10% of the amount on your bill if you have been satisfied with the food and service.
It may seem as if you will hardly be able to walk around without throwing money and tips left and right. Do not despair - if everything else fails and you should be in doubt then follow your mood. If you have been happy with the service given to you, and if you do not have anything to complain about, then the best way of showing your appreciation is by leaving a tip for the people who have taken care of you.
Happy vacation!

Historical Landmarks Of Paraguay

With a fascinating landscape iconic for its striking contrasts, Paraguay is a top destination in South America. Steeped in history and beautiful vistas, Paraguay should be top on the list for anyone heading to the continent.
There are a number of iconic landmarks that make the country a major draw. If you are planning a visit, make sure you check some of these top historic attractions during your stay.
Iguazu Falls
Found in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Iguazu Falls are an absolutely magnificent natural feature bordering on Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. The falls are surrounded by lush green forest - the falls beauty is well recognised, making it a popular backdrop for many photographers and directors.
Panteon Nacional De Los Heroes
The Panteon Nacional De Los Heroes in Asuncion is a national monument that offers tourists a look back at the lifeline of Paraguay. The Pantheon's plaza fills with vendors each day, all selling traditional Paraguayan items. Find pottery, bows and arrows, artworks and many other cultural items available for purchase. It's a great place to spend the day if you're looking to bring something back with you from your trip, or if you just want to immerse yourself in a thriving hub of the country's culture.
Casa da la Independencia
Casa da la Independencia is a historical monument that celebrates Paraguay's 1774 independence. Translated as "The House of Independence", the building is renowned for its historical significance as well as its architectural supremacy. Paraguayans began their revolt against the Spaniards from this very place almost two hundred and fifty years ago.
Visitors can enjoy the museum inside the building which remains open and free until 6:30pm Monday through Saturday and from 8:00am until noon on Sundays.
La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná
The La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná in Itapúa is the ruins of a Paraguayan Jesuit mission. Built in 1706, the mission featured a beautiful church and other buildings featuring numerous, complex decorations. La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná is just one example of the many Jesuit Reductions - small colonies established by missionaries - throughout South America.

Things to be Thankful for in Goleta CAGoGoleta.com - Thanksgiving

How much do we love Goleta? There are long stretches of beautiful beaches, the famous Goleta restaurantsfarmers markets with fresh California-grown fruits and vegetables, world-class golfing, spas, biking trails, winery tours and so much more.  Let us count just a few of the many things to do in Goleta, and the many things that make our town so fun:
  • The Weather: Goleta experiences a lovely, year-round temperate climate. On average, the warmest month is August, while December is usually the coolest. February tends to be the wettest.
  • Welcoming People: Maybe it’s the sunshine but we think the people in Goleta couldn’t be nicer. They’re happy to welcome visitors and show them around our town. Our 30,000 residents love it here because Goleta is such a safe and active community. In fact, CNN Money listed Goleta as one of the “Best Places to Live” in 2008. Daily Goleta attire is generally California casual, while transportation and sightseeing services are abundant.
  • An Exciting History: A variety of cultures are celebrated in Goleta. Until the early 1700s, the area was populated by the native Chumash people. In the late 1700s two Spanish expeditions came to the area and founded the Santa Barbara Mission and the Presidio. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, former Presidio soldiers turned the Goleta Valley area into a prominent lemon-growing region, which we celebrate to this day with the annual Goleta Lemon Festival. The second half of the 20th century saw a transition to residential, suburban, research, aerospace, and academic environments with the establishment of the University of California, Santa Barbara campus, which is home to six Nobel Prize winners.
  • Shopping: Start now to pick up some beautiful items for holiday gift-giving occasions at some of the great stores in Goleta.
